The outlines of the Music and Sound Cultures (MaSC) research group at NYU Abu Dhabi were first formulated in the earliest days of the institution. Following a series of groundbreaking workshops held at NYUAD during the period 2013-2017, research, publication, and the intellectual framework of the group have collected into a recognizable commitment to work at the intersection of domain knowledge and machine learning, in particular with respect to music from the region. In this talk, we will review recent work and explore the traditions and structures of Arabic music with the help of Layth Sidiq, an expert practitioner. The study of the sophisticated world of Arabic music is presented as an example of how human learning and machine learning can be explored together, and the opportunities that such work presents.
