In light of the ongoing events in the Middle East, we want to reaffirm that the safety and well‑being of our community are our highest priority. The ISMIR 2026 organizing committee  has been in close discussion with the ISMIR board to explore different possibilities for the format of the ISMIR 2026 conference.

At this stage, ISMIR 2026 is planned as a hybrid event, with the flexibility to adjust the intensity of the virtual component depending on how the situation in the Gulf develops. This will allow us to respond quickly and responsibly to changing circumstances while preserving the spirit of the conference.

We are preparing several scenarios with our core principles in mind: high scientific standards, good music, diversity, inclusion, social interaction, mentoring, fun and, especially this year, safety. Our goal is to ensure that everyone can participate and interact in a setting where they feel secure and welcome.

In the coming weeks, we will send a survey to the community to better understand how you are planning to participate in this year’s conference under the current circumstances. Your feedback will be crucial in shaping the final format of ISMIR 2026. Rest assured that maximizing meaningful interaction within a safe environment (virtual, physical, or a combination of both) will guide all our decisions.

In the meantime, we encourage you to submit papers and plan to take part in this ISMIR, which is becoming particularly special due to these unforeseen circumstances. Your scientific and artistic contributions are what make this community so vibrant, and we are committed to creating the best possible conditions to present them.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have specific concerns or ideas that could help us make ISMIR 2026 a truly memorable and safe event for everyone.

Warmly,

Carlos Guedes, Kaustuv Ganguli and Gus Xia.

Dear ISMIR community,

We are aware of the rapidly evolving and deeply concerning situation in the Middle East.

The safety and well-being of our community is of the utmost importance to us. We want to assure you that the ISMIR 2026 conference will take place from November 8 through 12, 2026. Whether the conference takes place in person (with a virtual option) in Abu Dhabi or fully virtual will depend on how the situation develops in the coming weeks.

At this time:

  • We are closely monitoring developments related to geopolitical tensions, travel advisories, and any impacts on international gatherings.
  • The organizing committee is committed to the conference taking place, whether in person or fully virtual.
  • The paper submission timeline remains unchanged.
  • Our top priority is to support community members, presenters, and attendees in making informed decisions and to help ensure a safe conference experience.

We will continue to keep you informed with updates as more information becomes available, including any changes to conference logistics, travel guidance, or participation options. In the meantime, we hope that you and your families are as safe as possible.

Thank you for your understanding,

Best regards,
The ISMIR board and the ISMIR 2026 Organizing Committee
